Here's where each of the main farm provinces stands, and the one distinction that decides which rules apply to you.

The distinction that matters: your land vs. someone else's

Farmers spraying their own land are generally exempt from provincial applicator licensing in the Prairie provinces. Custom and contract operators are not — if you spray for hire, applicator licensing applies to you. Saskatchewan — a dedicated drone applicator licence

As of January 2026, Saskatchewan has a dedicated drone applicator licence, with training available through Sask Polytechnic. The framework also requires GPS record-keeping of applications and drift liability insurance. If you plan to spray custom acres in Saskatchewan, budget time for the licence before the season starts.

Alberta — framework in place, details coming

Alberta has a framework in place, but detailed guidance hadn't been fully published at the time of writing. Before committing to a custom-application plan in Alberta, check the province's current requirements — or ask us and we'll point you to the right contact.

Manitoba — clear split between producers and commercial operators

Manitoba keeps it simple: producers are exempt when spraying their own land; commercial applicators need a provincial licence. If you're a farmer considering doing custom work for neighbours, that step changes your licensing picture — plan for it.

Ontario — an active market today
